Syed Azfar Rizvi

I was born in Dhaka on 27 December 1957. I got my basic education from Azeempur English Medium School in Dhaka. I did my matriculation in first division from New Government School, the only Urdu Medium School of Dhaka from where lots of prominent personalities have studied. Then I got admission in Dhaka College but due to the severance of East Pakistan I couldn’t continue my studies there and migrated to Karachi through ICRC (International Committee of Red Cross).

I am thankful to Prof. Hasnain Kazmi and Prof. Imtiaz Hussain for helping me in acquiring education here. I then did my intermediate science in second division from Karachi. It was a very hard time and earn a living was too difficult alongside getting education. So in 1974 I started imparting door-to-door tuitions to resolve my financial problems. We were 6 brothers and 4 sisters with parents. They all were dependent on me. Besides bearing my education expenses I also had to look after all of them. In 1976 I got admission in Geology Dept. in University but later ended up doing Chemistry. From 1974 to 1982 I struggled aggressively and during the same period I got two of my sisters married and kept looking after my family as well as my education. Later we started offering group tuitions to the students.

Mr. Jamiluddin Aali was in National Bank of Pakistan at that time and helped us get the money granted for students of East Pakistan as “Qarz-e-Hasna”. Those few thousand rupees turned out to be a treasure for me. Dr. Peerzada Qasim was the kind man who awarded me with scholarship for the whole period in Karachi University. I can never forget the favors by these respected personalities and will always be grateful.

The group tuition endeavor ended up as a school. When we started the school there were only 2 students but let me tell you that after 25 years more than 55 thousands students have studied from our chain of schools. We had started with the name Dhaka Coaching Centre and now it has become Dhaka Group of Educational Institutions. We have O level and Matriculation system schools, coaching centers & intermediate colleges, which we are going to make degree-awarding institute next year. The current annual turnover of our group is 5 thousands students per year now Alhamdulillah.

When I had arrived in Karachi after migration I had only 10 rupees in my pocket but by the Grace of Allah now the total amount I offer as scholarships to students is more than 15 lac per year

I am happily married and have 6 kids. My wife Mrs. Syeda Hasina Rizvi also helped a lot in my activities, a working lady who is presently the Co-Chairperson of Dhaka Group of Educational Institutes. When we got married my wife was just matriculate but after marriage she did intermediate, graduation and masters, all as a regular student. At this stage I must submit my feelings and sentiments, which I have gathered during my marital association with her. In Fact she has left a deep impression of her amazing character upon glory and success. I thank her for the support she extended to me when I needed it most. I can rightly say that she is a lady of iron will. She never gave in to the odds. Her unflinching support and wisdom always guided me to resolve my problems of life. She has a loving heart and generous bent of mind. I pray for her health and long life.

Later, I got a chance to obtain diploma in education from UK and plenty of other diplomas, workshops and seminars came along.

Anjuman Tarraqi-e-Urdu offered me life membership and last year I was also made the member of syndicate of Federal Urdu University. We have also made an Art association by the name of Daira-e-Adab u Saqafat International. For the last 5 years, this association has made its name in the society under which we arrange different gatherings and seminars every month for the promotion of Urdu Adab. On social front, I have been an active member of life club international of which I was the District Cabinet Secretary last year.

Aamir Atlas Khan

Aamir Atlas Khan (born July 30, 1990 in Peshawar) is a Pakistani professional squash player. He is the nephew of former world champion, Jansher Khan.
2007 has been his most successful year and has seen his rankings rise. He was a finalist in the Governor NWFP International 2007 and in the President PSF international 2007, but in both occasions he was beaten by Mansoor Zaman. In August, he went one step better by winning his first title at the CAS international, beating Malaysian Mohd Azlan Iskandar.
As of 2009, Aamir, who turned pro in 2002 is ranked 15th, his highest ranking, and is the current No. 1 Pakistan squash player.
Aamir won a silver medal in the individual event at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

Aamir Sohail

A combative left-hand opener, Aamir Sohail was a predominantly back-foot player whose forte was improvisation. He loved to attack, and almost found it impossible to control his aggression. He showed no fear, epitomised by his baiting of Venkatesh Prasad in a 1996 World Cup quarter-final in front of a hostile Bangalore crowd. He was an effective left-arm spinner, more a one-day bowler than a Test wicket-taker. Aamir played a big part in Pakistan's World Cup triumph in 1992, and famously told Ian Botham that he might want to send his mother-in-law in to bat after Botham was controversially given out for 0 in the final. He captained Pakistan at the height of the match-fixing controversy, and was one of the whistle-blowers. His career suffered as a result, and he left the international scene early to work in broadcasting, where he might have tried harder to suppress his personal prejudices.

Mumtaz Mustafa

Mumtaz Mustafa is a young woman going places in a no uncertain way. At a time when Pakistan is struggling to recover a semblance of a national identity that is not tainted by its association with violent and aggressive factions, it is rare to read a news story in the western media that presents the country in a positive light. Last month, The New York Times ran just such a story about the first New York Sufi Music Festival, a free three-hour concert in Union Square, with music from the four provinces of Pakistan. Mumtaz, who has been an art director at HarperCollins in New York since 2007, was called upon to join the Pakistani Peace Builders team who were behind the event. “The initiative,” Mumtaz shares, “was conceived as a celebration of Pakistan’s rich culture and amazing Sufi music traditions, to remind the world of some of our shared values that are both humane and life affirming.”

For a cause such as this, taking time out from a full-time job that regularly demands long hours was a no-brainer for Mumtaz. “Any opportunity to work in the social sector is worth jumping at,” she explains. “As a successful Pakistani woman in New York City, I feel like I have been fortunate, so I try to give back.”

Mumtaz created the visual identity for the Pakistan Peace Builders; everything from the logo, stationery, stage design, banners, web and print invitations, which were distributed to every corner and borough in New York. This was obviously a project close to her heart – she had just two weeks to deliver and took it on pro bono. “We need more events like this,” Mumtaz says with urgency. “The PPB was formed after the attempted bombing in Times Square by a Pakistani-American.” Shaking her head in disbelief, she talks of how the only way to change the negative perception is by showing other sides to Pakistan, such as the Sufi festival did, presenting messages only of peace, love and tolerance. And she understands well the signifance of doing so.

Piety permeates his life as a spirit behind it. And simplicity, simply is the mode there of. Humbleness and selflessness, are traits of his personality.

Qazi Hussain Ahmed

Qazi Hussain Ahmed was third elected Ameer, Jamaat-e-Islami of Pakistan, after its fouder-Ameer Syed Abu ul Ala Maudoodi and his successor Mian Tufail Muhammad. He was born in 1938 in Village Ziarat Kaka Kheil Sahib District Noshera NWFP, his father Molana Qazi Abdul Rab, was a distinguished Theologian and partly because of his Scholarship, and partly because of his political insight he was elected President the then Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind NWFP.
He is the youngest amongst his ten siblings. His two elder brothers namely Dr. Attique-ul- Rehman and late Qazi Atta ur Rehman had been workers of Islami jamiat-e-Talaba(A sister orgainzation of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan). Qazi Hussain Ahmed followed the suit and started participating in the activities of jamiat. He studied Jamiat Literature and imbibed the spirit thereof, and then dedicated the rest of his life for the cause of Islam.
Earlier Education and Practical Life
Qazi Hussain Ahmed received his earlier education from his learned father at home, then having passed his graduation from Islamia College Peshawar. He earned his M.Sc in Geography from University of Peshawar, whereafter, he taught as Lecturer in Jahanzeb College Saidu Sharif for three years. Due to political activities, and his natural bend for the same he had to discontinue his service, so he resigned. Thereafter, he started his own business at Peshawar, there too, he made his name known and was elected as Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry NWFP.
Political Life
His introduction with Islami Jamiat Talba during his student life, whipped up his zeal to work in the vanguard of Islamic movement. Therefore, he acquired the membership of jamaat Islami and went on to head the Organization in Peshawar City, then District Peshawar and thereafter the President ship of the NWFP Chapter of the party fell to his lot.
In 1978 he was appointed as Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, in 1987 he became Ameer-e-Jamaat (president of the Party), and since then has served as such, for four terms in a row.Qazi Hussain Ahmed was elected to the Senate of Pakistan in 1985, and again elected Senator in 1992, but this time in protest to the Government Policies, he resigned as senator.
It is worth mentioning that he won the election as a member of National Assembly from two constituencies in the general election held in the year 2002 .
UNITY OF UMMAH----- The first priority
Qazi Hussain Ahmed has always taken pride as a follower of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and therefore unity of the followers of the Prophet of Islam has always been his chief concern and to get this objective, he has striven hard to forge unity amongst various factions of Islamic Parities and that especially of the components of MMA Alliance (Muthida Majlas-e-Amal) was materialization of his dream. Due to his selflessness, he was unanimously elected President of the Alliance after the sad demise, of Maulana Shah Ahmed Noorani. Earlier, when the fire of hatred of dissent and division between Shias and Sunnies, was flame, he formed National solidarity council (Milli Yakjehti Council) which effectively extinguished the sectarian fire. Thereafter he was instrumental in the formation of IJI (Islami Jamhoori Ittehad) an alliance of right wing of political Parties.
When lingual bias in Karachi was enflamed Qazi Sahib led a procession of brotherhood love and peace (Karwan-e- Dawat-o- Muhabbat), all the way from Peshawar to Karachi and back which enkindled the candle of love throughout country in general, and peace was restored in Karachi, in particular. It may be recalled that he dauntlessly, led Tahrik-e-Nazam-e-Mustafa(Enforcement of Sharia) in the province of NWFP as its provincial chief and bore the brunt of imprisonment. His efforts to bring about unity among Ummah were not confined to the territories of Pakistan alone, rather, they were world wide in scope and nature.
When Mujahideen battling the then USSR, fell apart, Qazi Hussain Ahmed collected notables and leaders from around the Muslim world, to iron out the differences among various Afghan Mujahideen Groups, unfortunately, the enemy neutralized all such efforts. Again seeds of dissent were sown among Muslim Freedom Fighters in Kashmir; he again brought them together and dispelled the misgivings in time. When Doctor Hasan Turabi Founder Of Islamic Movement in Sudan, and General Umar Hasan Al Bashir the Head Of the State, stood estranged, both the parties referred the matter to the Qazi Sahib for arbitration which resulted in peace between the parties. But the International and regional conspiracies frustrated peace efforts, notwithstanding, he let not the differences turn into a clash.
Be it, Iraq, Kuwait or issue of Palestine, Qazi Hussain Ahmed was not less concerned. Plight of the Muslims in Bosnia ,Kosovo and Chechnia, agonized him beyond description, last but not least repression of the Muslims in Burma and Eriteria equally pained him, therefore he tried his best to find out a just solution to the aforementioned problems under the aegis of united forum Of Muslim Ummah.
Qazi Sahib and Extention Of Propogation
Right after assuming the leadership of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, Qazi Hussain Ahmed paid special attention to the propagation of the manifesto of the Party by taking out countrywide processions, extending invitation to study the program of the party to the notables from every walk of life and in this connection, he formed various National Committees, a hectic membership campaign was launched throughout country , as a result thereof, over 4.5 million of people, espoused the cause of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Arrests and Imprisonments
Qazi Hussain Ahmed was arrested on many a occasion for his commitment to the cause of his party. He was first arrested during Tahrik-e-Nizam-e-Mustafa in 1977 again he was imprisoned when he took out a protest procession against American aggression in Afghanistan. Once more he protested over publication of blasphemous cartoons of the Prophet (PBUH) in Danish Paper, thus he was jailed during his detention, he penned down number of articles which were later published in a book form, which are eight in number.
Family Life
Qazi Hussain Ahmed is married with two sons and two daughters. His wife and children all are Jamaat-e- Islami activists. He is lodging up in a two bed room flat which speaks volumes of the facts that how simple a life he leads like any party worker. He has full command over Urdu,English , Arabic and Persian a part from his native tongue Pushto. He is great admirer of the poet of Islam. Allama Muhammad Iqbal and quotes if from his both Urdu and Persian poetry, at will, in his speeches and conversations.

Hanif Mohammed

Hanif Mohammed (born 21 December 1934 in Junagadh, Gujarat, India) was one of Pakistan’s greatest cricketers, playing for the Pakistani cricket team in 55 Test matches between 1952/53 and 1969/70 and averaging a fine 43.98, with twelve hundreds.

The highest of those centuries, 337 against West Indies in 1957/58, was the longest innings in Test history (and stood as the the longest in all first-class cricket for over 40 years) as Hanif spent more than 16 hours at the crease to save his team from a hopeless position after they had followed on 473 runs behind.

In 1958/59, he produced another astonishing batting display by breaking Don Bradman’s record for the highest individual first-class innings. Hanif made 499 before being run out attempting his five hundredth run; this mark stood for more than 35 years before being eclipsed by Brian Lara in 1994. Plenty more runs were still to come, and in all he made 55 first-class centuries and finished with an outstanding first-class career average of 52.32. He could bowl with either arm, and even kept wicket on a number of occasions.

Hanif’s long career lasted until 1975/76 and took him all over the world, but he never played in the English County Championship, although he did have a single outing for the Northamptonshire Second XI in August 1965 whilst preparing for his appearance for a Rest of the World XI against England at the Scarborough Festival a few days later. Hanif was in fact working in England in 1994, and hearing of the possibility of his record being broken rushed to Edgbaston, unfortunately too late to witness any of Lara’s innings.

Hanif was named as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1968.

Many of Hanif’s relations were also fine cricketers: his brothers Mushtaq, Sadiq and Wazir all played Tests for Pakistan, as did his son Shoaib, another brother Raees was once twelfth man for Pakistan, and four nephews had first-class careers. His mother Ameer Bee was a national badminton champion in pre-independence India and is considered responsible for inspiring her sons to take up sports.

Namira Saleem

Dreams come true, only when one is truly willing to make them happen. Need to know how?!! Meet Namira Saleem.

Belonging to a Pakistani family, born in Karachi settled in Southern France Namira Saleem has materialized her dreams when she is hardly 35 years old. She is single and lives with her parents. She always had a strong belief in her dreams, and most of them had come true. She made her mark as a professional astronaut who has been to the South Pole and as well as the North Pole and has breathed there, all happy and proud. She has been able to hoist Pakistan’s flag at the poles.

She had been to the South Pole earlier and now she has become the first Pakistani to reach the top of the world - the Geographic North Pole. She awaits her space flight and is due to become the first Pakistani to travel into space in 2008. She has completed her necessary training in America and now she is ready for her space mission. It is a great Honor as no other Pakistani has ever done this and she surely deserves to be appreciated. Namira said it was her childhood dream to become an astronaut. She will undertake the two-hour long space journey which would take place in this very year of 2008. It will be a sub-orbital flight which will break the boundary between earth and space and she will have the honor and thrill of staying there for 15 minutes. For this, she will receive “Commercial Astronaut Wing” from the US Federal Aviation Authority.
She completed her last term of training in a TS-400 Simulator. During the simulator she experienced weightlessness and other forces which are encountered while being in a space flight and now she is completely ready after enjoying and having learnt from all these experiences.

Her latest experience of being at the North Pole was quite very enriching. She was extremely happy when she conveyed her feelings from a satellite phone. “It is great honor to represent my country as the first Pakistani citizen at the Geographic North Pole during the ‘International Polar Year’ that marks the challenge of climate change our planet faces”, Namira told this from the North Pole through a satellite phone.

“As I hoist the Pakistan flag at the pinnacle of our planet, I convey a universal message of peace and to assert to the global community that Pakistani nation is peace loving and tolerant nation,” she added.

Based in Southern France, Namira has deep affiliation with innovative art and multi-dimensional mixed media, some created around poetry she writes and some are musical she incorporates into songs in her own voice.
Her collectibles and decorative art objects also come along her to support global causes.
Namira created a specialized line of musical art objects with built-in messages in the voices of renowned altruists, first unveiled at the United Nations in May 2002.
“As a humanitarian artist and a truly global citizen I have also come to hoist a flag of universal peace at the Pole,” she said, adding that this peace flag bears the theme of her United Nations exhibition ‘Peace-Making with Nation-Souls.’
She sees the war and conflict with pain and hopes that tolerance can be inspired through the arts and understanding for the peace and progress of the world.
“The North Pole bears an amazing resemblance to Pakistani’s scenic Northern Areas” said Namira, expressing her sentiments of joy and happiness.
“As Pakistan’s Honorary Ambassador of Tourism, I’d like to invite the world to experience Pakistan’s rich culture and to touch the world’s top most mountain peaks, like the K-2,” she stated.

Namira also praised the 2004 Polar expedition of Anouskha Kachelo, a Pakistan born UK citizen who is known to be the youngest woman to have reached the North Pole.
“My Polar mission is that of a peace ambassador, while Anouska’s expedition was that of a true adventurer. It remains a source of inspiration for me to this day,” she said.
Namira Saleem had also made an attempt to hoist Pakistani flag at the North Pole on April 14, but could not succeed due to bad weather.

Now, she is all set to enter into space as a Proud Pakistani. She has indeed come a long way in her professional pursuit. Namira’s artistic soul is all the more peace-loving and tolerant towards the beautiful world out there and feels that we must reflect a positive image of Pakistan as a peace-loving and progressive country.
Pakistan needs more souls like you… WELL DONE LADY!!!

He is hugely popular in Rawalpindi and is known for creating a large number of schools in that city. He is famous for his 'awami style' (public style) of politics. He is one of few politicians who started their political career at grass roots level and rose to prominence. Pervez Musharraf

Former President Pervez Musharraf was born on August 11, 1943 in Neher Wali Haveli (which means "House Next to the Canal"), in Delhi, British India, and stems from an educated, middle class family of government servants.

After independence of Pakistan in 1947, Musharraf's family migrated to Pakistan where his father, Syed Musharraf Uddin — a graduate of Aligarh University — joined the Pakistan Foreign Office. His mother, Zarin, who holds a master's degree from the University of Lucknow has been a working professional.

President Musharraf spent his formative years in Turkey and is a fluent speaker of Turkish.

He attended St Patrick's School, Karachi (a Catholic school), graduating in 1959, later attending Forman Christian College (a Protestant school) in Lahore.

In 1961, he volunteered for the Pakistan Army and entered the Pakistan Military Academy at Kakul. He was commissioned on April 19, 1964 in the Artillery Regiment. He joined the Special Services Group where he served for 7 years. A graduate and instructor of the Command and Staff College, Quetta, and the National Defence College, Rawalpindi, President Musharraf is also a graduate of the Royal College of Defence Studies of the United Kingdom.

He fought two wars against India in1965 and 1971. While President Musharraf is a man of war, he strongly believes in peace in the region and rapprochement with India. While in government, he made strides to foster permanent peace in South East Asia and came close to solving all outstanding issues including Kashmir.

President Musharraf came into power in 1999 and occupied what TIME magazine described as “the most dangerous job in the world” playing a crucial role in fighting the global war on terrorism. The role that he played with incredible courage surviving more than a few assassination attempts; and he still remains a target of those that want to see the world divided as “West and The Rest”.

In the course of his seven years at the helm, President Musharraf empowered the people of Pakistan at the grass roots level through the introduction of a local government system; the women as well as minorities of Pakistan were given reserved seats at every tier of the Parliament; the Freedom of expression was unlocked by opening up the media and allowing multiple private TV channels to operate for the first time in the history of Pakistan, and the electronic and print media began operating independent of the government.

Perhaps his government's biggest achievement was the turnaround of the economy.
