Dr Tahir S. Shamsi

Dr Tahir S. Shamsi, Medical Director at National Institute of Blood Diseases and Bone Marrow Transplantation, graduated from Dow Medical College, Karachi in 1988. He got the membership of the Royal College of Pathologist in 1994. He was elected a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists UK 2001. Pioneer of stem cell transplantation in Pakistan. Performed more than 300 blood and bone marrow transplant.
He is the author of book on Haematology Histograms. He is the Co-investigator of 3 observational studies. He has written 7 chapters in Haematology reference and text books.
There are 31 research papers to his credit. He is the joint editor of a multi-author book on “Thrombosis & Haemostasis in Obstetrics & Gynecology” by Blackwell since oxford. He has recently completed phase II studies on: Hb-F augmentation in Beta Thalassemia major. Eltrombopag in the management of chronic refractory ITP. His main areas of interest are stem cell biology, tissue factor – factor VII pathway and novel therapeutic approaches in Haematological disorders. He is the Medical Director, consultant Haematologist / Transplant physician and director stem cell programme at National Institute of Blood Disease & Bone marrow transplantation, Karachi.

Asarulislam Syed

Amir of Jannat Pakistan Party, Asarulislam Syed, M.D, Neurologist and Psychiatrist, lives in California, USA. Besides enjoying a deep interest in cognitive sciences and human behavior, he has held a lifelong interest in The Quran, and has devoted himself, pondering over The Final Message. A non-conformist Muslim , he has no religious sectarian affiliation or denomination. He delivers the rational message of The Quran from Shalimar Radio, Los Angeles, every Saturday at noon on Channel 900 AM.

Born and raised in Lahore, his family comes from Tibba Syedan, Sialkot. His parents, Dr. Zubaida Gilani and Brigadier Habibus Saqlain, were both physicians from King Edward Medical College Lahore. His grandfather, Hafiz Syed Mohammed Isaac, a pupil of the renowned Syed Mir Hasan, Professor of Arabic at Scotch Mission School & Murray College, Sialkot, imparted to him, his first complete discourse (Dars) on translation and concepts of The Quran.


While a medical student in Lahore in the 70’s, Asarulislam formally studied The Quran at the Tolu-e-Islam Quranic Education Center in Lahore, Pakistan. He was a dedicated pupil of Pakistan’s renowned Quranic scholar and QuaideAzam’s Political Advisor, Baba Ghulam Ahmed Parvez . Working as a physician in Saudi Arabia for seven years allowed him the opportunity to learn the Arabic language and metaphor, and develop a deeper understanding of the cultural and social settings of the lands which gave The Quran.


His wife Nayla Asar Syed, M.D., a Child Psychiatrist, is a graduate from Fatima Jinnah Medical College and Kansas University Medical Center. Married for 33 years, they live on a farm in Southern California. They have four children.

Asarulislam is an Abdalian, a Kemcolian, and a Jayhawk.

Sara Abbasi


Sara Abbasi is a philanthropist who has been committed to spreading access to education worldwide. Her charitable work on various boards is marked by a dedication to breaking down cultural barriers and enabling cross-cultural understanding. Ms. Abbasi serves on the Board of Developments in Literacy (DIL), an international nonprofit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of female literacy in remote areas of Pakistan. Since 1997, DIL has built 200 schools in Pakistan. In 2001, Ms. Abbasi was the driving force in establishing DIL?s San Francisco chapter.
Additionally, Ms. Abbasi serves on the board of The American Pakistan Foundation (APF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding education, healthcare, micro-infrastructure and entrepreneurship opportunities to the under-privileged people of Pakistan. She serves on the board of One Nation, a national philanthropic initiative that promotes pluralism and inclusion in America; The World Affairs Council of Northern California; and Menlo School, an independent, accredited and coeducational college preparatory day school for students in grades 6?12.
In 2003, Ms. Abbasi and her husband, Sohaib Abbasi, endowed the Sohaib and Sara Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies at Stanford University, a key forum for interdisciplinary research and teaching in Islamic Studies on the west coast.

Dr Tariq Shahab

Dr.Tariq Shahab is a Vascular and Interventional Cardiologist.  He is Board Certified in Cardiovascular Diseases, Internal Medicine, and Interventional Cardiology.  He has also been elected a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and American College of Internal Medicine.
His main interest is in fixing blockages inside coronary arteries without the need for coronary artery bypass surgery.  He believes most blockages can be successfully opened using the technique of angioplasty and stenting.  He has performed hundreds of procedures involving not only one artery but also three vessel or left main coronary artery disease.
Dr. Shahab is also experienced in putting stents in the carotid artery to prevent strokes in patients who have blockages in that important artery.  Presently, the only treatment for carotid artery disease is surgery.  Dr. Shahab has presented the results of carotid artery stenting from more than 600 patients at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology.
"Carotid Stenting will be the procedure of choice for carotid artery disease to prevent stroke in the near future." says Dr. Shahab.
Dr.Shahab graduated from Dow Medical College University of Karachi, Pakistan and then came to the United States for further training in cardiovascular diseases.  His Internal Medicine residency training was completed at the University of Michigan Medical Center.  He was awarded Outstanding Resident of the year Award at Michigan and was offered the position of Chief Medical Resident.  His cardiology fellowship training was at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.  He was then selected to be on the faculty at the University of Kentucky.  He is an elected fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and American College of Physician (FACP).  He is also a member of the American Medical Association and American Federation of Clinical Research.  Dr. Shahab was elected to the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association in Kentucky and he is Chairman and Founding Member of the Kentucky Health Educational Campaign.  In Kentucky, he started the School Health Educational Program and he was the Program Director of the International Symposium on Heart Disease, Cancer and Stroke, entitled: "A preventive Approach."
More recently, Dr. Shahab was selected to present a Poster Board and Interesting Case to the world wide annual CRT Meeting 2009 in Washington, DC.

Begum Laila Haroon Sarfaraz


Begum Laila Haroon Sarfaraz has taken over the responsibility as a President in the year 2005. She belongs to a very well known Haroon Family who has served the country since decades. Her parents Sir Abdullah Haroon & Lady Nusrat Haroon were one of the founders of the country who fought hard to turn their dream of a separate home land for the Muslims into a reality. Their role being a Muslim League leaders are always remembered in the history of Pakistan.
Following the foot steps of the parents, Begum Laila Haroon, her sister Late Begum Hidayatullah, her brother Late Mahmud Haroon and other family members have spent their lives in social wok and in serving the country.

Uzma Noorani

Uzma Noorani is a rights activist and has been working in the field of human rights and women rights for over two decades.
As a human rights activist she has :
· Served on the council of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) for over a decade. Through her work in HRCP she has conducted fact finding missions all over Pakistan and Azad Jammu Kashmir to assess the state of human rights. She has monitored and observed the election process and conducted visits to jails to highlight the plight of prisoners. She has taken part in workshops, seminars and protest rallies conducted by HRCP.

· Founding member of Women’s Action Forum (WAF) a pioneer women’s rights organization of Pakistan. As an activist she has been lobbying and advocating for the rights of women since the early 80’s. She has supported non-violent solutions during ethnic strife in Karachi in the mid 90’s.

· She is as an office bearer of Pakistan India Peoples Forum for Peace and Democracy (PIPFD), and a member of South Asians for Human Rights (SAHR).

· Ms.Noorani was instrumental in the inception of Panah Shelter Home and is a Founder Trustee of Panah Trust. She is also a Managing Trustee and General Secretary.

· Founding member of People’s Resistance, a civil society group campaigning for the restoration of the judiciary in 2007.

· Member of Violence against Women Watch (Aurat Foundation) and Joint Action Committee which is a coalition of several NGO’s that come together to work on specific issue’s

Due to her rich experience Ms.Noorani has been invited to speak at various forums and participated in several workshops, both national and international. She has been interviewed by both electronic and print media. Ms.Noorani has helped initiate several campaigns and pressure groups to lobby on various issues of human rights, women’s’ rights, environment, peace, justice and law.
As a peace activist she has participated in various forums advocating peace. Recently she was part of a delegation to Afghanistan to participate in a trialogue on peace (India, Pakistan and Afghanistan).
Additionally she has advocated and lobbied against discriminatory laws like the Hudood Ordinances ,and Blasphemy Law and campaigned for special legislation such as a law on domestic violence.

Nadira Panjwani

Nadira Panjwani is a social worker and philanthropist based in Karachi, Pakistan. She is the Founder and Managing Trustee of the Panjwani Charitable Foundation and Trusts.

In 1994, she established the Zainab Panjwani Memorial Hospital in memory of her late mother. This 75-bed, not-for-profit organization is dedicated to serving the public and providing quality medical care at subsidized rates and also on free basis.

In the year 2000 she established the Dr Panjwani School/College for the Blind, which was inaugurated by the President of Pakistan. This is a modern, purpose-built training complex providing education from nursery to Master’s level for visually-handicapped students. This school complex, affiliated with the University of Karachi, is the largest academic centre for visually handicapped people in Pakistan. It is functioning under the management of the Ida Rieu Welfare Association, Karachi.

In 2004, President Pervez Musharraf inaugurated the Dr. Panjwani Centre for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research at the University of Karachi. This is the first centre of its kind in Pakistan and second in South-East Asia. The Centre conducts research in the field of molecular medicine and drug development. It focuses on developing a comprehensive understanding of the molecular basis of prevalent diseases in Pakistan through its MPhil and PhD training programmes at national and international levels. This Centre has put Pakistan on the international map of drug research through its valuable contributions to leading scientific journals.

Nadira Panjwani teaches at the Bahria Institute of Management & Computer Sciences of the Bahria University (an educational organ of the Pakistan Navy) in Karachi. She is an honorary instructor at the University since 1996 and has arranged for a large number of scholarships for deserving students for pursuing studies at different levels.

Nadira Panjwani is a Trustee of the PANAH Shelter Home for Women. This organization provides support and protection to women in distress who are victims of societal and domestic violence.

She is a member of the Jinnah Society. The main objective of this society is to assist in the development of projects dedicated to the memory of Quaid-e-Azam for propagation of his ideals, principles and vision.

Nadira Panjwani is a Founding Director of the Pakistan Human Development Fund, established in early 2002 to assist the National Commission for Human Development towards promoting health and educational facilities at the grass roots level in rural areas of Pakistan.

She is a member of Board of Governors of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, Syndicate of the Dow University of Health Sciences, Board of Governors of the National University of Modern Languages, and Board of Governors of the Bahria University.

Nadira Panjwani also served as the Minister for Women Development and Population Planning in the 2007-2008 caretaker cabinet of Sindh.

In recognition of her meritorious services in the field of Public Service, the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan conferred upon her the prestigious awards of Sitara-i-Imtiaz in the year 2000 and Hilal-i-Imtiaz in 2004.

Muhammad Amir Khan

Amir Khan is a leading public health professional with diverse experience in research, strategic planning, programme development, as well as implementation and management of projects/interventions. The range of his research work includes randomized controlled trial, policy reviews, prospective intervention studies, surveys, evaluation studies, qualitative studies, economic analysis, and stakeholder analysis. Many of the research work has already been published in peer reviewed journals including Lancet, Health Policy and Planning, IUATLD Journal, and Social Science Medicine. Currently he is coordinating a DFID supported five-year communicable disease research programme in Pakistan (April 2006- March 2011). 
The development experience includes: national and provincial level strategic planning, project formulation, development of interventions, systems and guidelines, as well as development of training materials for managers, care providers and communities. The management and project implementation experiences include: country director of rural health care delivery programme in three provinces of Pakistan (six years), multi-partner research activities with national disease control programmes, working linkages with overseas teaching institutions, and TB and malaria interventions in about fifty districts of Pakistan . 
Based on recognized performance in the field of public health, elected as a Chair of the IUATLD Health Systems Strengthening and TB Education Working Group (2001 – to date), Vice and then Chair of IUATLD TB Scientific Section (2003 - 2007), member of IUATLD Ethics Advisory Group (2003 - 2008), and member of Executive Board (2008 – to date). Since 2008, the University of Leeds has appointed him Senior Lecturer Public Health (honorary).

Dr Gholam Mujtaba

Dr. Gholam Mujtaba, is a prominent politician of urban Sindh in Pakistan . He served as Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh, Pakistan (1992-94).He was the leader of the coalition party to the Sindh Government from 1992-94 . Dr. Mujtaba was a prominent student leader of Pakistan (1976-78). He was elected General Secretary of the Karachi University Students Union in 1976, and served as a member of the University Senate and Syndicate in 1976-78.He played a leading role in the Pakistan National Alliance Movement of 1977-78 as a student leader.
He was a close associate of the former President Pervez Musharraf during his last days in power. He had succeeded in striking a deal between the opposition and the President, but failed to dispense the covert under wrap.
Dr.Mujtaba is prominent amongst Pakistanis in the U.S. politics. He is a Member of the Chairman's Advisory Board of the Republican Party, the Republican National Committee of the United States. He is the Director of he Corona-Elmhurst Center for Economic Development where US Senator Charles Schumer and Assemblyman Jose Peralta are advisors and sponsors of the Center.
Professor Mujtaba is named to the United Who's Who Registry as an Honored Member. He is a distinguished alumni of King's College London, US Army Academy of Health Sciences, Fort Sam, Texas, the University of Karachi and Rajshahi Cadet College.

I have now thousands of students and practitioners. I have conducted hundreds of seminars at press clubs, five Stars hotels & multinational companies to spread this knowledge.

Numerous articles have been written in national and international newspapers and magazines on my life and work. I have worked closely with the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF and many doctors without boundaries.

I have always tried to provide free services to the people. I established an institute Zheel Sciences, which is the first of its kind. I was given the title of ‘Musafir’ by my students in Central Asia.

The only objective behind all this struggle of mine is social service. I want to help the humanity and in return I only want people to remember me in their good memories after my death.

Dr. Khalid Omer

Dr. Khalid Omer is one of the founder members of HOPE and has assisted it in various technical aspects throughout the years. He has also served as a Treasurer and is currently on the Board of Directors. Dr. Khalid Omer deals with various data based research projects being conducted by HOPE as well as health advocacy campaigns. Dr. Khalid Omer is also the National Coordinator, CIET, Pakistan. He has previously worked as Health Consultant for UNICEF and Greenstar Social Marketing.

Dr. Mubina Agboatwalla

Dr. Mubina Agboatwalla, the visionary behind HOPE, founded the NGO in 1997 with a group of dedicated workers committed to bringing literacy and health to the neglected urban slums of Karachi while working at the grassroots level. Under her direction, HOPE has established two community centres, two hospitals and several informal schools in Karachi and Thatta. Dr. Mubina Agboatwalla is Assistant Professor, Dept. of Community Health Sciences, at the Aga Khan University Hospital besides working as a Consultant Paediatrician in various Karachi Hospitals. She is a well known Researcher and has contributed to numerous Indexed international medical journals. She also writes for various national newspapers including Dawn, Jang etc.

Dr Asad Ashraf

Dr Asad Ashraf, member Punjab Assembly son of Mr Hasan Ashraf was born on June 21, 1963 in Lahore. He obtained the degree of MBBS in 1986 from Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore and completed his Post-Graduate Diploma in Cardiology in 1994 from NICVD, University of Karachi; and served as consultant cardiologist, Services Hospital Lahore. He has participated in various conferences during 1993 and 1994. He functioned as unelected Advisor to Chief Minister Punjab during 1997-99. A physician and a cardiologist, who remained a Member of Punjab Assembly during 2002-07 (functioned as Deputy Parliamentary Leader) and has returned to Punjab Assembly for the second consecutive term in general elections 2008. He has visited UAE, UK, Qatar and Tanzania.

Dr. Ruqia Saeed Ahmed Hashmi, Minister for Inter Provincial Coordination Balochistan is wife of Saeed Ahmed Hashmi was born at district Quetta. She has completed Graduation from DAW Medical College in 1976. She got selected on women reserved seat for MPA from W-53 in 2002. She is affiliated with PML (Q). She delivered her services as Chairperson for Standing Committee on Education, Health, and other department. She has been on the Board of Directors of Lady Dufferin Hospital Quetta, SCSPEB, Pakistan Medical Association, Taraquee, CHQ, NATPOW and TVO.
